Day 1
San Jose, Costa Rica Upon arrival, relax in your new surroundings and enjoy a sightseeing tour of San Jose. Tour the colorful Plaza de Cultural; the National Museum, which houses a collection of pre-Columbian art and other exhibits detailing the history of Costa Rica; and the National Theater, a magnificent building of post-baroque splendor. This evening, enjoy a welcome dinner. Day 2 San Jose – Sarapiqui See first hand the process of making chocolate from the cacao bean and learn the history and continuing importance of cacao to Central America’s economy. This evening enjoy dinner at the Rainforest before venturing out to see Costa Rica’s many different amphibian species. Enjoy a tour which consists of a multimedia presentation on the natural history of amphibians. Later, take a walk (30–40 min.) to the outer edges of the Tirimbina Rainforest to visit a small pond. A trained guide will provide a safe environment for close contact with the species that are found, while learning about their adaptations and way of life. Day 3 Sarapiqui Begin your morning with a visit to an organic pineapple plantation and learn about the various types of this exotic fruit and why Costa Rican pineapples are amongst the world’s best. Later return to the Tirimbina Rainforest to see another species of mammal in Costa Rica, the bat. Did you know that bats represent 50% (110 species) of Costa Rican mammals? We invite you to enhance your education, dispel myths you may have heard about these wonderful mammals, and enjoy this adventure into the world of the bats. You will have a presentation of the history of bats, their classification system, diversity, adaptations, reproduction methods, threats, and more. And for the most popular part of the Bat Tour, a trained guide will provide visitors a safe opportunity to touch, feed and release safely captured bats. Later this morning you are welcome to take a short guided walk (15–30 min.) to see the mist nets used to gently catch these creatures. These bats are kept for less than 2 hours and the professional methods used assure the well-being of the animals. Day 4 Sarapiqui – Monteverde Next, you will not believe your eyes as you travel into the Monteverde Cloud Forest, where trees grow to heights of 100 feet! In this spectacular ecosystem, you will encounter many incredible species of flora and fauna. Then you continue on to Selvatura Park*, a cloud forest preserve in the heart of Monteverde. Day 5 Monteverde Your day begins participating in a reforestation effort by planting a tree in this spectacular nature preserve. Next, you will learn about some of the region''s most beautiful wildlife with a visit to one of the world’s largest butterfly gardens. You will also see the hummingbird gallery containing more than 14 different species! Day 6 Monteverde – Palo Verde - Guanacaste Palo Verde is located within the Palo Verde National Park on the Pacific slopes of Guanacaste Province in northwestern Costa Rica. The 19,000-hectare park has seasonally dry forest on limestone outcrops and extensive wetland vegetation bordering the Tempisque River that flows into the Gulf of Nicoya. This area includes some of the best patches of dry forest remaining in Central America, with giant pochote, cedro, and Guanacaste trees. The freshwater marsh in front of the Station is an important feeding ground for 60 species of resident and migratory water birds. Within the marsh, such species as the black-bellied whistling duck and the blue-winged teal have been observed by the thousands. Day 7 Guanacaste An exciting morning waits at the Baula National Park. Catch at first glimpse one of the few remaining nesting grounds for the Giant Leatherback Turtles. You will have a guided tour plus watch as the world’s largest reptile lays her eggs and then returns to the sea. After lunch, you will visit a local working farm. Day 8 Guanacaste – Sarchi - San Jose Take a leisurely ride through the countryside to Sarchi. This charming town is known for its authentic handicrafts. During your visit you will have the chance to tour the local oxcart factory, perfect for picking up unique souvenirs! Continue on to San Jose where you will enjoy a wonderful farewell dinner. Day 9 San Jose – Depart For Home
This tour features San Jose, Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, Butterfly Farm and Guanacaste.
Learn about Costa Rica’s unique vegetation on a guided nature walk through the cloud forest. Spot indigenous wildlife on a river boat cruise in a covered canoe. Participate in a local reforestation effort by planting a tree in the cloud forest! *Optional activity at Selvatura Park must be chosen at time of booking.
